The Call for submissions for EPAA’s 3Rs Science Prize 2022 has been launched. The €10,000 prize is granted every two years to a scientist with an outstanding contribution to 3Rs. EPAA wants to promote positive contributions from industry or academia and encourage more scientists to focus their research on the 3Rs goals. Scientists working on relevant methods for regulatory testing (e.g. safety, efficacy, batch testing) providing an outstanding contribution to the use of the 3Rs may apply for the prize. The call is available online on the EPAA website and can be accessed via the link: https://ec.europa.eu/growth/calls-expression-interest/3rs-science-prize-2022-call-submissions_en Applications should be sent to grow-epaa@ec.europa.eu by Monday 3 October...
Read moreThe European Union Joint Research Centre for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) has issued its 2021 ‘Status Report on the Development, Validation and Regulatory Acceptance of Alternative Methods and Approaches’. The 2021 EURL ECVAM status report describes research, development and validation activities, as well as initiatives that promote the uptake and use of non-animal methods and approaches in science and regulation. The principle of the Three Rs, i.e. Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal use in basic, applied and translational research, as well as for regulatory purposes is firmly anchored in EU legislation, with full replacement of animal testing being the...

Read moreWith our brains we perform parallel computer tasks, such as adapting and learning. Could it be that similar processes also take place in computers? Much research is already being done into new brain-inspired computation in the development of so-called neuromorphics chips. BayesBrain, led by TU/e researchers Regina Luttge and Bert de Vries, is trying a slightly different approach, because we still know far too little about how our brains actually work. ‘We therefore want to use existing computer architecture to control the brain and make it understandable. Of course, this cannot be done directly on a human brain. At the...
Read morehDMT is proud to be part of the NXTGEN HIGHTECH Consortium, that receives a contribution of 450 M euro from the ‘Nationaal Groeifonds’. This is an important step for the development of high tech equipment for the production and upscaling of Lab-on-Chip, Organ-on-Chip, Artificial organs, and Cell-based products.
Read moreOn 15 March 2022, Sebo Withoff from the University Medical Center Groningen gave a presentation about organoids and Organ-on-Chips in the context of a series of lectures, organized by the Royal Physics Society (KNG). Aim of the KNG is to promote broad interest in the natural sciences. Title lecture: The use of organoids and Organ-on-Chips for the study of disease processes Summary by Sebo Withoff Perhaps the most important findings of research into the human genome (the complete genetic DNA composition of an individual) are that everyone’s genome is unique and that the DNA differences are expressed in a tissue-...
Read moreThe Alternatives Research & Development Foundation (ARDF) is currently accepting applications for its Annual Open grant program. Please see below or the ARDF webpage for more information on this opportunity. Applications are due by 11:59pm ET on April, 15, 2022. RDF’s Annual Open grant program was established to fund research projects that develop alternative methods to advance science and replace or reduce animal use. Proposals are welcome from any nonprofit educational or research institution worldwide, although there is a preference for U.S. applications in order to more quickly advance alternatives here. Expert reviewers evaluate proposals based on scientific merit and...
Read moreMetastasis of tumors is regarded as the largest contributor to cancer-related deaths, but physiologically relevant tumor models for cancer cell metastasis research are still lacking. Two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cell culture (on a flat surface) is traditionally used as in vitro model to investigate tumor behavior, migration, and invasion. Unfortunately, this (2D) monolayer culture does not replicate the complexity of tumor and extracellular microenvironment where invasive cancer cells reside in tumor tissues. Therefore, 3D multicellular systems formed by cancer cells are gaining importance in the field of cancer cell invasion research. To establish physiologically relevant tumor models, cancer cell spheroids of...
Read moreMaria Tenje, professor at Uppsala University, Sweden receives funding for her project PHOENIX, an ERC Consolidator Grant in physical sciences and engineering. Focus is on developing novel microfluidic tools for high-throughput and fully controlled organoid generation. Organoids are self-assembled 3D cell models that can be used as alternatives to animal testing for drug development and basic biomedical research. In PHOENIX, Maria Tenje will further expand the droplet microfluidics toolbox that her lab has pioneered during the last ten years, to gain control of the cellular architecture of the organoids by using integrated acoustics. For the project, she will collaborate with...
Read moreOn Tuesday April 5th the first edition of the Life Science event will take place in Corpus Congress Centre in Leiden. We are looking forward to an inspiring day with a seminar program based on three main themes: cell biology, Next Gen Sequencing and innovative developments in DNA technologies. The event also offers the opportunity to meet other professionals and to get acquainted with the innovations of our exhibitors. A visit to the Life Science event is free of charge and you can register via the website. Anne Rios, principal investigator at the Princess Máxima Centre, will open the day...
