Angelo Accardo receives 3mE Cohesion Grant to develop 3D bone tissue microenvironment

hDMT PI Angelo Accardo of the Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (TU Delft) receives, together with Mohammad Mirzaali of the Department of Biomechanical Engineering (TU Delft), the 3mE Cohesion Grant of 200 k€ from Sectorplan funding.

Current orthopaedic implants suffer from insufficient osseointegration rate in ageing patients and are susceptible to failure at the bonding between the implant and bone. To overcome this limitation, in this project, we aim to design, fabricate, characterize, and test polymeric bio-mimetic meta-implants (BMMI) involving a combination of advanced mechanical engineering designs within high-resolution light-assisted additive manufacturing (AM) techniques such as 2-photon polymerization (2PP) and stereolithography (SLA). These structures will enable us to develop novel three-dimensional (3D) in vitro models resembling the physiological conditions of the bone tissue microenvironment and to systematically investigate the bone growth in BMMIs.
