Biochrom: Bio-inspired chromatography column for circulating tumor cell extraction from blood
Sertan Sukas has received a personal grant of the NWO Open Competition Domain Science - XS for the project Biochrom: Bio-inspired chromatography column for circulating tumor cell extraction from blood.
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are rare cells that originate from tumors, travel in the human circulatory system to eventually spread the disease to other organs. Consequently, analysis of CTCs is crucial for revealing the mechanisms of cancer and developing new treatments. However, only 1-10 CTCs are present per ml of blood against billions of peripheral blood cells. There is still no method available to specifically target CTCs for their extraction from blood. This project aims to apply chromatography, a classical analytical technique, for separation and extraction of CTCs from blood, but with a completely novel and unconventional bio-inspired approach.
This one year project will be carried out by hDMT Cancer-on-Chip cluster member Sertan Sukas at the Microsystems group (TU/e) of hDMT PI Jaap den Toonder. Sukas started on December 1, 2020.
